In second semester nothing was distributed digitally and I had an irritating mixture of badly organised notes on the ipad and scribbles on a stack of paper in my bag. I had lovely digitally annotated notes available from any PC. So the upshot was in my first semester of 4th year everything was distributed in advance - all I took into uni with me was my ipad, and it was great. He gave up taking handwritten notes with it anyway - it's really difficult to do effectively, and you're probably better just using paper. It's pretty good and gives you the precision of a ballpoint, but scratches the screen if you don't use a screen protector. I had a friend who had a similar idea to me and spent about £30 on this. I didn't buy an expensive stylus, I just bought a cheap rubber/foam thing which I didn't end up using much at all. However, if you're not given copies ahead of time, it's pretty useless as a replacement for pen and paper.
You can add things like bookmarks and links to quickly jump through the document too, which is nice.

I bought iAnnotate PDF for about £7, and it was definitely worth it - it syncs your annotations automatically, so as soon as you're finished it'll be uploaded to the cloud and you have copies of your annotated notes online. This is definitely better than paper copies, since you can zoom into small images and annotate in high, vectorised detail. If you're given copies of the lecture notes ahead of time, you can upload them to google drive or dropbox and use a good pdf annotater to scribble small diagrams or make text notes on them as you go through the lecture. I found that it's usefulness as a notetaking device really depends on the way the notes are distributed.

This doesn't make sense any more", and find more material or go and ask the TA for help later. Because I wasn't under huge time pressure while writing them up, I could take the time to go "huh. I found that it was the second step, of typing up my notes, that really helped me learn the material I had to read my notes, understand them, and write them up as English, and added cross references to other useful material (professor's web pages, text books etc). Either way round, keep the source that generates the graph as well as the graph itself, so that you can regenerate it with tweaks later.
If putting in graphs, try and generate them rather than draw them - I used gnuplot to graph data and functions at the time I'd now use matplotlib and Python, but that's personal preference.
I find the best approach for recall was to take notes with pen and paper at the time in a separate note book, using a ruler if needed for straight lines.
